Telling Architectural

Telling Architectural offer a versatile approach to the design and management of terracotta rainscreen cladding along with other specialist forms of construction whether these are lightweight steel walling, pre fabrication, stone, natural terracotta or zinc and copper.

Terracotta Facades

Telling Architectural distribute Argeton in the UK and collaborate nationally with the cladding services division of Taylor Maxwell in providing an unequalled level of technical sales and advisory services including structural calculations, conceptual and project design and budget costings. On major projects a bespoke network is available for clients to remotely access and

upload data, monitor design development and retain input in the project design process via a hierarchical password system.

The companies participate in the installation of Argeton by providing an experienced contract support manager and can project supervise where requested.

Terracotta Rainscreens are manufactured under the ‘Argeton’ process created by the German Clay Tile Manufacturers Association.

Argeton facades are an innovative concept for the use of terracotta tiles in a rainscreen. The system utilises the proven principle of the ventilated cavity, creating a condensation free and thermally efficient cladding whose components are suited to modern architecture. The natural beauty and symmetry of the Argeton format lies in the precise and clean lines achieved without overlapping, the traditional method of protecting a tile façade against water ingress. The profile of the tile minimises water penetration and was tested to CWCT Standards at the Taywood Laboratories in the UK. Testing to ASTM is underway.

The contrast of the joint and the smooth tile enhance the aesthetic effect of the façade and maintain a traditional whilst modern theme. Argeton can be created into a modular format with powder coated aluminium sections used as features and the use of variable joint profiles can replicate large plank effects. Modular features can facilitate fire stopping measures where regulations so require.

Argeton facades interface readily with alternative forms of curtain walling, glazing and insulated render systems to provide flexibility of design in the creation of an individual style.

Composition:- The Argeton Rainscreen is constructed to comply with DIN 18516 Part 1 relating to ventilated non load bearing structural cladding systems. Natural clay tiles are available to a standard grid of up to 500mm in length and 250mm in height. Optional height tiles are available to suit grids of 225mm, 200mm, 187.5mm, 175mm and 150mm. The length of the

tiles is variable and where necessary can be easily adjusted on site with a diamond tipped wet cut saw. Tiles are 30mm in thickness and perforated throughout their length to provide a maximum system weight of 50 kgs/m2.

Aluminium substructures are designed in accordance with the British Standards applicable to rainscreen facades and have been tested at the Taywood Laboratories in the UK for compliance with CWCT Standards.

Appearance:- Smooth faced natural clay tiles available in fourteen colours created with natural ochres and the unique firing process. External corners are formed in powder coated aluminium with either a square hollow section or a cruciform. Linings to windows and base trims can be provided either to contrast or blend with the colour of the tile selected.

The Argeton Terracotta Façade can be installed in both refurbishment and new construction. Structural deviations are readily overcome by the aluminium support system recommended. Traditional backgrounds of blockwork or concrete are suitable for support of the Argeton System.

Thermal bridging between the cleat and the structure is prevented by the use of a thermal separator. Lightweight steel walling can be designed to accommodate the Argeton System where re-modelling of the existing structure is proposed.

Design and Planning:- Standard sections are available to assist the designer in the selection of appropriate interface details. Utilising CAD an elevation can be laid out to grid in the preferred tile module. Structural calculations for the fixing of the support structure, wind speeds and any loadings that may be applicable will be undertaken by the in-house design

and engineering department of Telling Architectural. These calculations are project specific, particularly in refurbishment where the age and condition of the fabric will require testing and analysis to establish its structural integrity.

Taylor Maxwell Partnership

In August 2004 a partnership was formed with the cladding systems division of Taylor Maxwell. Their operation from fourteen regional offices provides excellent support and technical services for the specifier that is closely linked to our in house design department. It is intended that the collaboration will be expanded in to other innovative cladding forms where our unique service will reduce the load in design responsibility upon the consultant/

contractor in interfacing and programming. The services offered in conjunction with

Taylor Maxwell include but are not restricted to:

• Electronic CAD Downloads in DXF and DWG Formats

• Specification Downloads

• Design & CONDAM Evaluation

• Management and Design Coordination

• Planning and Budgetary Advice

• Maintenance Manuals

• Installation Training and Site Supervision

• Approved List of Contractors (Job Specific)
