UNDERFLOOR AIR CONDITIONING

Advanced Ergonomic Technologies is the principal global distributor of the Hiross Flexible Space System, a modular, standardised, underfloor air conditioning system. It has a proven track record with over 15 million square feet installed throughout the world in a variety of climatic conditions.

Principles

The Flexible Space System requires a raised access floor cable void of between 200 and 300mm for the supply and return of conditioned air. This means that false ceilings are not required, reducing the height of new buildings by as much as 15% and increasing headroom in refurbishments. Studies indicate that this reduces both construction costs and times by

around 10–15%, whilst life cost savings are now being recorded as the reliability and energy efficiency of the system reduces maintenance levels, and because of lower ‘churn’ costs. High standards of indoor air quality are achieved with localised high grade filtration (up to clean room standards), humidity control and ventilation efficiency. The system is also noted for the

pleasant, draught-free environment it produces. The floor finishes available include carpet, ceramic, stone, stainless steel, parquet, terracotta, concrete and terrazzo.

Operation

The Flexible Space System makes use of an easily installed and relocatable baffle material to segregate the supply and return air plena under the floor. Individual, floor-standing, super-quiet, air handling units serve zones of between 100 and 300m2 . Treated and filtered air is delivered into the supply plenum where suitably located fan assisted terminals (fantiles) deliver this air into the occupied space. The fantiles have on-board controls which allow

users to set the required room temperature and fan speed. Spent air is drawn from the space back to the zone unit via return air grilles located over the return plenum. Fresh air is introduced here to ensure high standards of dilution. The whole system is controlled by an electronic management system. All fantiles and zone units are connected by Category 5 data cabling which permits centralised monitoring and adjustment by the facilities manager. In addition, this network can enable individual users to adjust their personal fantile via simple software loaded onto their PC.

Installation & Maintenance

The Flexible Space System can be installed at an approximate rate of 500m2 per week per team, reducing on-site construction time. Because the system is zoned, regular maintenance can be carried out with minimum disturbance to users, whilst the reduction in pipework, ductwork, valves and dampers reduces the level of maintenance required. When office layouts change it is simple and quick to relocate or add fantiles, avoiding user complaints of draught often experienced with conventional ceiling-based systems.

Over and above the standard system warranty, AET offers extended warranty and leasing options for users.
